DETROIT (AP) -- Western Michigan won a shootout 1-0 on Saturday to advance to the finals of the Great Lakes Classic.

The Broncos (11-4-2) got their only goal of the game from Mike Cichy at 10:21 of the first period. It was their first appearance in the tournament since 1986.

Seventh-ranked Michigan State (5-10-3) got the tying goal from Matt Berry with 16 seconds left in the game while skating with an extra attacker.

Western Michigan got five shots on goal in overtime, while the Spartans had only one shot.

Mike Leone scored the only goal in the shootout, the first ever at the Great Lakes Invitational.

Michigan State had been in the title game in three of the last four years, but the Spartans are 1-5-2 in their last eight games.
