Spartan coach returns to the city of 2009 Final Four
DETROIT -- Three weeks after leading the Michigan State men’s basketball team to the NCAA Championship game at Detroit’s Ford Field, Coach Tom Izzo will throw out the honorary first pitch at Monday’s Detroit Tigers’ game (April 27) against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.
Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., with the first-pitch ceremony taking place shortly before that.
Izzo earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2009, winning the fifth regular-season title of his career. In addition, Izzo led the Spartans to a fifth trip to the Final Four in the last 11 seasons, advancing all the way to the national title game.
Michigan State finished the season with a 31-7 record, good for the third-most wins in school history. In league play, MSU’s 15-3 mark was good enough to win the league crown by four games, tied for the second-largest margin in league history.
