Central Michigan University director of Athletics Dave Heeke announced today that women’s basketball coach Sue Guevara has signed a new five-year contract with the university.
MT. PLEASANT --
The contract extends through the 2013-14 season and replaces the four-year contract Guevara originally signed when she was named CMU’s head coach in March of 2007.

“I am proud to announce that we have signed a new five-year contract with Sue Guevara,” Heeke said.  “I felt it was important to acknowledge the commitment and passion that Sue has shown in building the foundation for a successful program in just two years.  I have full confidence that this foundation will lead to a championship-level program for years to come.

“Sue’s ability to recruit high-level talent, develop successful student-athletes on and off the court, generate excitement about the program in the community and represent this university with dignity and class are hallmarks to the championship culture creed this department follows.  This new agreement represents the commitment to and investment in the Central Michigan women’s basketball program and Sue Guevara.”

Beginning with the 2009-10 season, Guevara’s base salary will increase to $150,000 per year.  Her current salary is $133,900.  She will be compensated $10,000 for radio, television and promotional appearances with additional incentive opportunities totaling $35,500 based on performance. Guevara also will receive 20 percent of the net profit of CMU’s summer women’s basketball camps for the duration of the contract.

“I would like to thank President Rao, Dave Heeke and our entire administration for the support they have shown for myself and our program,” Guevara said.  “The foundation we have built over the past two years would not have been possible without their support along with the hard work and dedication of my entire staff.

“I also would like to thank our players for the commitment they have had to turning this program around in such a short period of time.  I came here expecting to build this into a championship-level program and I feel with the efforts of a lot of people, we are well on our way to doing so.”

Guevara led the Chippewas to the third-biggest turnaround in Mid-American Conference history, a 10.5 game improvement from her first season to last year’s 18-14 mark, besting the previous school record of 9.5. The 18 wins were the most since the 1990-91 squad won 21.

In two seasons, Guevara has mentored the program’s second MAC Freshman of the Year honoree in Brandie Baker and two-time All-MAC selection Britni Houghton, as well as Academic All-MAC choice Kaihla Szunko. She also guided the Chippewas to their first postseason victory since 1992 with a 67-59 victory over Akron in the opening round of the MAC Tournament.
