Colts earn 4-2 victory over Saginaw
BARRIE, ON -- The Saginaw Spirit battled the Barrie Colts to a 4-2 loss at the Barrie Molson Centre Saturday night. Goalie Edward Pasquale turned aside 43 shots in the loss, while winger Jordan Skellett earned the game’s third star honors with two assists. Former Colts Michael Sgarbossa and Ryan O’Connor each tallied a point against their ex teammates, Sgarbossa a goal and O’Connor an assist. The Spirit have 32 points and a record of 15-8-2-0.
Spirit center Michael Sgarbossa gave the Spirit an early 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal at 12:15 that was assisted by winger Jordan Skellett and defenseman Ryan O’Connor. It was Sgarbossa’s ninth goal of the season and his second in Spirit uniform.
The Colts would respond with two consecutive power play goals in the second frame, the first coming from center Ryan Strome at 1:20 and the second being fired in by winger Bryan Cameron at 7:28. Defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES), center Alexander Burmistrov, winger Darren Archibald and center Luke Pither all garnered assists. Spirit center Ivan Telegin would even up the contest prior to exiting the second period, moving the score to 2-2 with a goal at the 10:36 mark. Skellett and defenseman Brad Walch notched the assists.
The two teams would continue to battle into the third period, but it was the Colts who would edge out the Spirit for the 4-2 victory. Cameron scored his second goal of the night at the 2:17 mark, this time courtesy an assist from center Colin Behenna. Center Alex Hutchings (NHL TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING), assisted by defenseman Dalton Prout, would round out the game’s scoring with a goal at 15:18 in the third.
Spirit goaltender Edward Pasquale (NHL ATLANTA THRASHERS) tallied 39 saves on 43 shots. Peter Di Salvo of the Barrie Colts garnered 26 saves on 28 shots.
