Second win over Saginaw in three days
SAGINAW -- The Saginaw Spirit battled the Plymouth Whalers to a 3-2 overtime loss Friday night at The Dow Event Center.
Wingers Joe Pleckaitis and Garret Ross each added one goal in the effort. The loss moves Saginaw’s record to 16-11-2-0 for the season.
While the first period saw no scoring from either team, the Spirit sounded off in the second with a goal scored by winger Joe Pleckaitis at the 6:42 mark.
Winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL PHOENIX COYOTES) assisted on the play.
The Spirit went on to notch another goal at 15:58 by winger Garret Ross, with assists credited to centers Michael Sgarbossa and Vincent Trocheck.
The Whalers finished the period with a goal at 16:07, courtesy of winger Ryan Hayes. Assists went to winger Jamie Devane (NHL TORNOTO MAPPLE LEAFS) and center Joe Gaynor. The Spirit held the lead, ending the period 2-1.
Plymouth opened the third period with a goal from center Tyler Seguin at 15:45, assisted by winger Tyler Brown and defenseman Beau Schmitz. The third period closed in a 2-2 tie, moving the game into overtime. The game ended with the Whalers defenseman Michal Jordan (NHL CARLOLINA HURRICANES) scoring a powerplay goal 1:33 into overtime. Centers A.J. Jenks (NHL FLORIDA PANTHERS) and Tyler Seguin assisted on the play. The game ended with the Whalers ahead 3-2.
Spirit goaltender Edward Pasquale (NHL ATLANTA THRASHERS) posted 30 saves, while Plymouth goalie Matt Hackett (NHL MINNESOTA WILD) finished with 27 saves.
