Saginaw opens season with victory over Heritage
FLINT TWP. -- Carman-Ainsworth nearly discovered the hard way that you can never count the defending state champions out of any game.
The Cavaliers held an 18-point lead in the third quarter against rival Flint Powers, and then nearly watched the whole thing dissipate before their eyes. The Chargers twice closed within one point of the lead, but could never get over the hump. Carman-Ainsworth held off Powers' rally with some key baskets in the final minute, and earned a hard-fought, 78-72 victory.
Elsewhere in a Saginaw Valley battle, Saginaw held on to defeat Heritage by a 65-60 final. A ten-point lead for the Trojans nearly disappeared, but the Hawks' rally fell short. It was Saginaw head coach Lou Dawkins' first game on the sidelines since the tragic death of his teenage son, Dorian, over the summer.
