Flint earns 3-0 win over Dayton
The Flint Generals went in to Saturday nights tilt with Dayton looking up at them in the standings, well, they moved 2 points closer with a decisive 3-0 victory tonight.
FLINT -- The first period tonight was unlike the last three games, in fact a complete 180. The Generals outshot the Gems 20-4 in the first 20 minutes; the only problem was the score remained tied at zeros. Much of this was thanks to former Flint Generals tryout and Dayton Gems goaltender Derek MacIntyre. He continued to best the Generals until the 11:45 mark of the second period when John Ronan scored his 10th goal of the year from Rick Smith and Jake Pence. With the Generals holding the lead in shots 33-12 by the end of the second period, the scored remained only 1-0 Generals.
Ironically, it was the Generals defense, that has been suspect over the last few games that stepped up and then John Mori scored his 9th of the year at 1:06 of the third from Jamie Schaafsma and Brian Smolinski. Rob Nolan had one of his strongest games of the season, and when Corey Coutirier and Tim Hartung broke in on a 2 on 1 break Rob made one of his best saves of the year keeping the score at 2-0 Gens. Brandon Gentile added a goal of a 4 on 2 rush when he drove to the net and beat MacIntyre low to make it 3-0 at 3:11 of the third. The Generals defense took it from there earning Rob Nolan his first shutout and first star honors.
The Genrals hit the ice tomorrow at 4:00 at Perani Arena when they Face the Fort Wayne Komets. Tomorrow is also “Skate With the Generals” after the game.
