#23 jersey retired at Ruben Daniels Middle School
SAGINAW -- The gym floor at Ruben Daniels Middle School was once where Dorian Dawkins displayed his limitless promise on the basketball court. On Tuesday afternoon, it was the gathering spot for Dorian's family, friends and peers to pay homage to his memory, just over six months after his tragic death.
Dorian's #23 jersey was retired during an emotional ceremony, and a high school basketball showcase in his honor was also announced. Taking place on February 6th and 7th at Delta College, the two-day, eight-team tournament will feature boys teams from Columbus Northland, Detroit Country Day, East Lansing, Detroit Consortium, Clarkston, Academy of Oak Park, Saginaw High and Flint Powers.
Saginaw is coached by Lou Dawkins, Dorian's father, who spoke of the impact his late son continues to have on his life.
"Dorian was a great young person, first of all," began Dawkins. "And for his life to be taken away at such a very young age, it gives everybody an eye-opener. Not just in the city, but across the United States. You know it's crazy, after his death, I started playing more attention...to young people having heart attacks. You know, ever since he passed in June, I believe anywhere between 20 and 30 young people have died."
