Saginaw beats Sault Ste. Marie 4-0
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON -- The Saginaw Spirit swept their three game weekend series and moved themselves into position to challenge for fifth place in the OHL Western Conference with a 4-0 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Sunday night.
The win was backstopped by Tadeas Galansky, who posted 39 saves to earn the game’s first star honors and his first OHL career shutout. Jordan Szwarz and Tyler Murovich hit the twenty goal plateau for the season, with both scoring in the effort. Szwarz also earned two assists in the effort, for the game’s second star honors.
The Spirit are currently in sixth place in the OHL Western Conference with 62 points and a record of 28-22-4-2, with Sunday’s win moving the Spirit within one point of the fifth place Greyhounds (63 points). The seventh place Erie Otters (59 points) suffered a 6-3 loss to the Kitchener Rangers earlier in the day.
The two OHL West Division rivals battled through a scoreless first period, but the Spirit lit up the scoreboard with three straight goals in the second period. Winger Jordan Szwarz tallied a power play goal at the 9:04 mark, from center Tyler Murovich and defenseman Jordan Hill. Defenseman Cody Sol would give the Spirit a two goal advantage with his sixth of the season at 10:37, courtesy an assist from winger Josh Shalla. Murovich wrapped up the scoring burst with a goal at 18:16 from Szwarz, ending the second period with the Spirit leading by a score of 3-0.
Center Michael Sgarbossa sunk the dagger with the lone goal of the third period, scoring an empty netter at the 17:25 mark from Szwarz. Sgarbossa’s goal gave the Spirit a 4-0 victory over the Greyhounds, for their third win in as many days.
Spirit goalie Tadeas Galansky earned the shutout with 39 saves. Greyhounds goalie Robin Lehner posted 2 saves on 2 shots before leaving the game with an injury, to be replaced by Bryce O’Hagan who earned 11 saves on 14 shots.
