Sullivan records double-double in 76-71 setback
MIDLAND -- The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 76-71 contest to Ashland Saturday afternoon (February 20).
The Timberwolves fall to 12-12 overall, 9-11 in the GLIAC. Ashland now stands at 13-12 overall, 9-11 in the GLIAC.
With one week remaining in the regular season, the race for the GLIAC Tournament continues to be wide open. Wayne State is now seventh at 10-10 overall, followed by AU and NU at 9-11. Two of those three teams will make the tournament. The Eagles have the tiebreaker over the Timberwolves thanks to going 2-0 against Northwood this season.
The Timberwolves had the advantage in the opening 14 minutes, going up by as many as eight while leading the entire way. But the Eagles controlled the final six minutes, scoring 17 of the final 22 points to take a 33-28 lead to the break.
Ashland led 49-37 with 11:29 remaining when Northwood fought back into the game. A 15-3 run in less than four minutes tied the game at 52 with 7:53 remaining. Ashland won the game down the stretch thanks to strong free throw shooting. The Eagles went 10-10 from the stripe over the final 1:59 to earn the win.
Lionel Sullivan (Detroit, Mich./DePorres) led the Timberwolves, finishing with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Dorian Pierce (Jackson, Mich.) had 18 poitns, six assists and six rebounds, while Andrew VanDierenDonck (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) added 11.
Northwood will travel to Ferris State Thursday night (February 25). Game time is set for 8 p.m.
