Hockey icon signs autographs at Zehnder's
FRANKENMUTH -- When you're simply known as "Mr. Hockey," it's a safe bet that your legacy in the sport will endure for generations to come.
Saturday, many fans got an up-close look at the incomparable Gordie Howe, as the hockey icon paid a visit to Zehnder's in Frankenmuth, where he signed autographs for over two hours.
It was a rare, public appearance for the 81 year-old, who won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, and claimed six Hart Trophies as the league's Most Valuable Player. Fans came out in droves to greet the legendary "#9."
When the Zehnder family put out the call to get Howe to make the appearance, he said yes for one very simple reason.
"Because we're friends," said the 23-time NHL All-Star. "Friends with the organization, and also...when you spend two-thirds of your life in a given area that's close enough to Detroit. I owe the people of Michigan a lot."
