The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team ended their 2009-10 regular season with a victory over Michigan Tech this afternoon (Feb. 27). The Cardinals defeated the Huskies by a score of 70-64.

HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech opened the game on a six-point run by the 17:30 mark; however the Cardinals revived themselves as they took their first of six leads throughout contest. With under 5:30 remaining in the first half of action, the Cardinals took the lead once again, as junior Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) netted a three-point shot to give SVSU the two point lead which they would not drop for the remainder of the game. Jackson ended the afternoon with 14 points, 10 rebounds and had one steal. The Cardinals held a three-point advantage at the halfway mark of the contest as the scoreboard read 34-31 entering the locker room.

The Cardinals offense remained strong throughout the second half by leading by as many as 11 points as Jackson hit a three point shot at both the 11:27 and 10:04 marks in the game. Jackson went 3-for-7 from behind the arch.

Saginaw Valley was led overall by senior Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich. / Romulus HS) who posted 17 points, 4 steals, three assists and two rebounds while freshman Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) scored 11 points and pulled down three rebounds.

With the victory, the Cardinals end their regular season with an overall record of 16-11 and 13-9 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. The win advances Saginaw Valley into post-season play as they will host a GLIAC post-season game at the Ryder Center on Tuesday, March 2 against Ferris State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
