Maurice Jones finishes fourth
DETROIT (AP) -- A year ago, Detroit Pershing guard Keith Appling made himself the overwhelming favorite for the 2010 Mr. Basketball award.
Monday, he made it official.
Last March, Appling scored a state-record 49 points in Pershing's 90-73 victory over Kalamazoo Central in the Class A championship game.
He played alongside 2009 Mr. Basketball Derrick Nix, who struggled to just four points. Appling broke Antoine Joubert's 26-year-old title game record of 47.
This season, Appling averaged 28 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Doughboys, who lost to Detroit Denby in the regional finals last week.
Appling joins Nix at Michigan State this fall. Appling had 328 first-place votes, followed by Trey Zeigler of Mount Pleasant with 114.
Arthur Hill's Maurice Jones finished fourth in the voting.
