DETROIT - Ray McCallum has been selected as the unanimous choice of an 11-member panel of sports writers as Associated Press Class B player of the year.
The 6-foot-1 point guard for top-ranked Country Day averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Country Day (24-2) meets Muskegon Heights in the Class B semifinals on Friday.
Yellowjackets coach Kurt Keener says McCallum is one of the finest players he's ever coached in his 30-plus years at Country Day.
Also named to the first team are Jullian Plummer of Muskegon Heights, Cory Starkey of Petoskey, Ladon Carnegie of Grand Rapids Union, Brandon Venturini of Allendale, Amir Williams of Country Day, Devin Long of Detroit Crockett, Derrick Davis of Bridgeport, Alex Gauna of Eaton Rapids and Flint Powers' DeMarco Sanders, Patrick O'Brien and Patrick Lucas-Perry.
Jim Kalbfleisch of New Boston Huron was chosen coach of the year. He took over a program three years ago that had been 33-137 in the previous eight seasons and quickly turned it around. Huron won 21 games in 2008-09 and went 23-1 this season. It was the only Class B team in the state to go through the regular season undefeated.
