Cardinals win game one, 5-2; T'wolves earn 6-2 victory in nightcap
MIDLAND -- The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of games against Saginaw Valley State at Dow Diamond Saturday night (May 1). The Cardinals earned a 5-2 win in 11 innings in game one before Northwood earned a 6-2 victory in game two.
Northwood is now 23-25 overall, 13-19 in the GLIAC. SVSU stands at 19-21 overall, 15-15 in the GLIAC.
Game one was close throughout. After the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third, Northwood plated a pair of runs in the fourth on a solo home run by Adam Rider (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) and a RBI single by Clay Rosette (Hartland, Mich.). SVSU tied the score in the sixth and the score would remain 2-2 all the way until the 11th inning, when the Cardinals plated three runs to earn the win. Rider finished the game with three hits, as did Michael Goodwin (Midland, Mich.. Matt Toporski (Essexville, Mich.) pitched well despite not earning a decision, allowing two runs in eight innings of work while allowing two runs.
The first two innings of game two saw both teams score in every at bat. The Cardinals plated one run in each inning, while Northwood scored two in the first and one in the second. Northwood took control from there, holding SVSU off the board the rest of the way. Brett Lechner (Midland, Mich.) finished the game 4-4 with three RBI's, while Rider added two hits and two RBI's. Mark Heard (Novi, Mich.) earned the win on the mound to improve to 3-3 on the year. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Northwood will finish their season with a home game against SVSU Sunday (May 2). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
