Iconic hockey coach inked to three-year deal
ANN ARBOR (AP) -- Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson has agreed to a three-year contract extension.
The deal announced Friday will keep Berenson behind the bench through the 2012-13 season.
Berenson played at Michigan from 1960 to 1962 and has coached his alma mater for the past 26 seasons.
The Detroit News reports Berenson had worked under rolling one-year contracts in past years.
The 70-year-old tells the Detroit Free Press the extension "gives the current players the feeling of stability."
Athletic director David Brandon tells AnnArbor.com "there aren't a lot of Red Berensons in the world."
Michigan won national championships in 1996 and 1998, and Berenson's next victory will be the 700th of his career.
