Two-run error costs Bulldogs in 6-5 loss to Eagles
FRANKENMUTH -- After leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning, everyone was convinced Frankenmuth had just wasted their last good shot at mounting a comeback against Bentley. Everyone, that is, except Frankenmuth.
Trailing 5-1 entering the seventh and final inning, the Eagles staged a remarkable rally which culminated with a gut-wrenching error. Down 5-4 with the bases loaded and two outs, Frankenmuth's Alec Bergman lifted a fly ball to right field which handcuffed Bentley outfielder Brandon Cagle, who tried to catch the ball on his backhand at the last moment and dropped it. With all baserunners running on contact, two runs scored easliy on the play, giving Frankenmuth their only lead of the entire game, as they earned a stunning, 6-5 triumph.
The Eagles' good fortunes would end in their regional title game, however. Memphis advanced to the state tournament with a 3-1 victory over Frankenmuth later in the afternoon.
