Great Lakes outscores South Bend 32-12 in series
MIDLAND -- Blake Smith homered for the fourth straight game and the Great Lakes Loons completed a four game series sweep of the South Bend Silver Hawks on Tuesday night.
With the 14-7 win on Tuesday, the Loons outscored South Bend 32-12 in the series.
Blake Smith homered for the cycle in the series, hitting a grand slam on Sunday, a three run shot in game one on Monday, a two run blast in game two Monday, and finishing it off with a solo shot on Tuesday. Smith is hitting .470 (31-for-66) with six home runs and 24 RBIs against the Silver Hawks this season.
Brian Cavazos-Galvez also homered for the Loons, his third straight game with a long ball. Cavazos-Galvez finished the game with four RBIs, while Rafael Ynoa drove in three.
South Bend has now lost six straight games and fallen to four games under .500 in the second half of the season. The Silver Hawks are just 1-17 against the Loons this year and 3-31 against them since the start of 2009.
It wasn't all bad for South Bend on Tuesday night, getting an early lead and showing a lot of fight in coming back from some deficits. Unfortunately, the Hawks never could retake the lead after the first inning and the Loons piled on late for the blowout win.
David Nick went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the South Bend offensive attack. Keon Broxton scored three runs while Bobby Borchering drove in two with a couple of singles.
Ramon Castillo also picked up a single, extending his team high hitting streak to 14 games. He has at least one hit in every game he's played for South Bend.
South Bend starter Brad Wilson (LP, 0-1) took the loss in his first appearance of the year for the Silver Hawks. Wilson allowed seven runs in 3.1 innings to the strong Loons lineup.
After Loons starter Elisaul Pimentel (ND) was chased after 3.2 innings, reliever J.B. Paxson (WP, 4-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings
