Parks' 29 saves paces 4-1 victory
The Saginaw Spirit dropped the Sudbury Wolves in their home opener Thursday night, by a score of 4-1. Goalie Mavric Parks earned the game’s first star honors with 29 saves on 30 shots, while rookie Brandon Saad earned the game’s second star honors with a single marker in the contest. The win moves Saginaw’s record to 2-1-0-0 with 4 points.

The Spirit brought the pressure early in the game, with rookie forward Alec Racino scoring the first goal of the game and his first OHL career goal at 4:49 in the first. Forward Justin Kea and defenseman Alex Lepkowski assisted on the goal. The Wolves quickly answered however, with forward John McFarland putting Sudbury onto the scoreboard with a goal at the 6:01 mark, courtesy assists from forward Kristoff Kontos and defenseman Charlie Dodero. The first period ended with the score even at a goal apiece.
Saginaw’s Vincent Trocheck advanced the Spirit lead to 2-1 late in the second period, scoring the game deciding goal at the 18:15 mark. Forward Josh Shalla and defenseman Brad Walch were credited with the assists. The Spirit momentum continued into the third period with two consecutive goals moving the score to 4-1 Saginaw. Forward Brandon Saad tallied a goal at 7:48 in the period, with captain Jordan Szwarz and Trocheck earning the assists. Forward Michael Sgarbossa rounded out scoring with an unassisted goal at 19:41 in the third.
Spirit netminder Mavric Parks posted 29 saves on 30 shots, while Wolves goalie Alain Valiquette ended the game with 32 saves on 36 shots.

The Spirit continue their home opening weekend celebration on Saturday October, 02 against the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, with the puck dropping at 7:11 PM. Hall of Fame former Detroit Red Wing Igor Larionov will be in attendance at Saturday’s game, courtesy Dixie Distribution and Maier and Associates Financial Group with transportation provided by Complete Limo.
