Timberwolves triumph, 31-24
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Northwood University football team evened its record at 3-3 with a 31-24 victory at Indianapolis Saturday night (October 9).
The Timberwolves are now 3-2 in the GLIAC. Indianapolis falls to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in the GLIAC.
Northwood's defense came out strong, holding the Greyhounds to zero yards through the first 12 minutes of the contest. But UIndy broke through in a big way, scoring on an 80-yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0 after one quarter.
NU came right back after falling behind, going 58 yards in 5:42 to tie the game. The drive was capped by an Aaron Shavers (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) 11-yard run.
The Northwood defense then gave the Timberwolves the lead. Defensive tackle Jason Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) did it all for Northwood on a second and 10 play from the UI six-yard line. He sacked the quarterback, forced a fumble and recovered the fumble in the end zone for Northwood's first defensive touchdown of the year to make the score 14-7. NU eventually extended their lead to 17-7 at halftime.
The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way, alternating scores from that point on. Indy cut the lead two 17-10, but Shavers' second rushing TD of the day made the score 24-10 early in the fourth. After a Greyhound touchdown made the score 24-17, Shavers found Donny Knoll (Warren, Mich./Woods Tower) for a 22-yard touchdown pass. That score made it 31-17 with 2:21 remaining.
Indianapolis scored less than a minute later to make it 31-24. The Greyhounds did get the ball back and get to the Northwood 20 in the final seconds, but were unable to score, giving the Timberwolves the win.
For the game, Indianapolis finished with a 427-357 advantage in total yards. Northwood had a 278-89 edge in rushing yards. NU forced Indy into two lost fumbles, the first two lost fumbles of the season for the Greyhounds. The Timberwolves dominated time of possession, finishing with a 39:16-20:44 advantage.
Anthony Brandon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) led all players with 96 yards rushing. Shavers had 85 yards rushing, 79 yards passing and three total touchdowns.
Northwood will host Tiffin Saturday (October 16). Game time is set for Noon.
