Two-game winning streak ends

The Saginaw Valley State University football team saw its two game winning streak come to an end Saturday after a 30-24 loss to Ashland University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference match-up.

ASHLAND, OH -- The Cardinals would find themselves in an early hole after Ashland quarterback Taylor Housewright found the endzone on a five yard run up the middle.  The Cardinals would respond quickly with on a 24-yard Thomas Goodroe (Byron, Mich.) field goal to make the score 7-3 with 9:10 remaining in the first quarter.

Ashland return man Anthony Capasso would find a lane on the ensuing kickoff and return it 82-yards for a touchdown to extend the Eagles lead to 14-3 with 8:59 left in the first quarter.

Ashland would add a field goal to end the half and take a 17-3 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinals would cut into the Eagle lead with :52 seconds left in the third quarter when Adrian Baker (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central HS) recovered a fumble in the endzone.

SVSU would cut back into the Ashland lead when Meijer "Player of the Game" Ronnie Lark (Flint, Mich./Powers HS) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-17.  Lark would finish the day with 115 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown.

After a late Ashland field goal to push the score to 30-17, SVSU would respond on an 18-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) to Jeff Janis (Tawas City, Mich./Tawas Area HS) to make the score the 30-24.  Jennings finished the day 24-of-43 passing for 227 yards and a touchdown, he also rushed the ball 9 times for 40 yards on the afternoon.

Andrew Beaver (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Dearborn HS) finished the day with nine catches for 93 yards and the defense was led by Thomas Stalter (Portland, Mich./Portland HS) who had 10 tackles while Wayne Sanders (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) added nine. Senior Rick Evans (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood HS) ended the afternoon with eight tackles and an interception.

With the loss Saginaw Valley falls to 3-5 overall on the season and 3-4 in the GLIAC, while Ashland improves to 5-3 overall on the season and 4-3 in the GLIAC. 

SVSU will return to action next weekend (Oct. 30) when they host Wayne State at noon.
