Timberwolves fall, 35-28
MIDLAND -- The Northwood University football team dropped a 35-28 contest to #17 Hillsdale Saturday afternoon (October 30).
Northwood is now 4-5 overall, 4-4 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale now stand at 7-2 overall, 6-2 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a strong start, scoring the opening touchdown of the game. Jordan Jonker (Hudsonville, Mich.) capped a seven-play, 96-yard drive with a three yard run to give the Timberwolves a 7-0 lead with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter.
After Hillsdale scored 14 straight points, Northwood tied the score at the 5:10 mark of the second. Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) found the endzone from 46-yards out to tied the game 14-14. The Chargers scored a touchdown late in the second quarter to send the game the break with the score 21-14.
With the score 28-14 in third quarter, Aaron Shavers (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) scored from 30-yards. That run capped a 47-yard drive to get Northwood within seven.
Hillsdale responded with another touchdown early in the fourth quarter, making the score 35-21. Shavers found Ashton Gulvas (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) on a five-yard pass with 1:33 remaining to make the score 35-28. The Timberwolves recovered the ensuing onside kick, but were unable to tie the game.
For the game, Hillsdale finished with a 427-363 advantage in total yards. The Timberwolves did hold a 221-141 edge in rushing yards. The Chargers dominated time of possession, finishing with a 36:39-23:21 edge.
Shavers finished the game with 113 yards rushing and 142 yards passing to go with a pair of touchdowns. Jackson had 79 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Northwood will travel to Grand Valley State Saturday night (November 6). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
