Timberwolves prevail at home, 41-35
MIDLAND -- The Northwood University football team finished its 2010 season with a 41-35 victory over Ferris State Saturday afternoon (November 13).
Northwood finishes its season 5-6 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC. Ferris State also finishes their season 5-6 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC.
The first quarter saw both offenses come out strong, as the two teams combined for five touchdowns. Northwood got touchdowns from Quillan Mathis (Detroit, Mich./Finney) on a 23-yard pass from Aaron Shavers (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) and a Shavers 68-yard run. FSU finished with 189 yards of offense in the quarter, while Northwood had 129 yards.
The defenses performed better in the second quarter, as the lone touchdown was scored by FSU. The Bulldogs finished the half with a 276-159 advantage in total yards and a 15-6 edge in first downs.
The third quarter proved to be all Northwood, as the Timberwolves scored all 21 points in the frame. Anthony Brandon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) capped the opening drive in the third quarter with a 30-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-21. After a stop on defense, Shavers scored from 43-yards out to tie the game at 28. Northwood ten took the lead late in the frame when senior Donny Knoll (Warren, Mich./Woods Tower) caught a six-yard pass from Shavers, giving NU a 35-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Northwood out-gained Ferris State 223-32 in the quarter, including 175 to -2 on the ground.
Ferris State tied the game at 35 with 6:22 remaining. NU responded on the following drive, going 53 yards on eight plays. The 4:35 drive was capped on a Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) one-yard run.
The Bulldogs took over with 1:47 remaining and got to the Northwood 27 before the Timberwolves defense held, giving NU the victory.
For the game, Northwood finished with a 459-431 advantage in total yards. The Timberwolves out-gained the Bulldogs 366-179 on the ground.
Shavers finished with 137 yards rushing, 93 yards passing and a total of four touchdowns. Brandon added 89 yards and a touchdown, while Jimmy Parsons (Midland, Mich.) had 75 yards on the ground.
