Oilers won first regional championship on Saturday
MT. PLEASANT -- Last Saturday's 17-7 win over Cadillac gave Mt. Pleasant its first ever regional championship.
The Oilers' reward, a semifinal match-up with four-time defending state champion East Grand Rapids, arguably the top high school football program in Michigan for the early part of this century.
"Why not? And that became kind of our motto now, is why not? And so we've kind of lived by that mantra, and that's the same thing this week," says Mt. Pleasant head coach Jason McIntyre.
"Well, we're really excited to have the chance to play in the semifinals. And playing EGR is a big deal for our school, because the last two times we played them, it didn't go the way we wanted. So, we're preparing really hard this week, and we're really focused," added senior running back Alex Horton.
"Oh, it's super fun. I don't think anybody thought we'd be this far. I mean, 12 wins...no other person has done that in the school. It's an awesome feeling," says senior wide receiver Ryan Heeke.
The Division 3 semifinal will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ferris State University.
Winner gets the winner of DeWitt versus Orchard Lake St. Mary's in the state championship, one week from Saturday.
