Yellowjackets cap off perfect season with 45-35 win over Monroe St. Mary
DETROIT (AP) -- Alex Niznak rushed for a state-record five touchdowns as Ithaca beat Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 45-35 in the Division 6 state championship game at Detroit's Ford Field.
The Yellowjackets overcame an early 14-point deficit Friday to win the first title in school history. Catholic Central lost in the championship game for the second straight year.
The Falcons jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but Ithaca tied with touchdowns. The Yellowjackets went ahead on Zach Whipple's 40-yard field goal and led 31-28 after three quarters.
Zack Moore's rushing touchdown gave Catholic Central its fourth lead of the game, but they couldn't stop the Yellowjackets. Niznak scored on a 7-yard run and added an insurance score after Catholic Central turned the ball over on downs.
