Nearly 75 local athletes given opportunity to compete
FLUSHING -- After a number of local Special Olympians were unable to attend the annual Games in Mount Pleasant this past summer because of excessive cost, the students at Flushing Middle School came up with a great idea.
They decided to host around 75 of these athletes Tuesday morning at the Middle School gym and put on their own competition, featuring events such as the push-up, sit-up and bench press contests.
The school raised money to host Tuesday's event by having a dodge ball competition back in November, and also by selling Special Olympics T-shirts.
It was a very rewarding day for the kids at Flushing Middle School who helped shine the spotlight on this group on Special Athletes.
"It's a population that really was ignored for many, many years and it's great to see these young kids come out and offer to help and do such a great job at it," said Special Olympics Area Director Jerry Daunt. "The great thing about Special Olympics is, everybody's happy. And it's a great thing to see, and it's great to see these young students get involved like this."
