Former Mott star scores 25 in 89-80 T'wolves victory
ASHLAND, OH -- The Northwood University men's basketball team claimed an 89-80 road victory over Ashland Thursday night (December 16).
Northwood is now 3-8 overall, 2-3 in the GLIAC. Ashland falls to 4-4 overall, 1-3 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Eagles with the victory. NU's last win over the Eagles occurred during the 2003-04 season.
Northwood used the 3-point line to earn a 38-37 lead at halftime. NU went 6-14 (48.4 percent) from beyond the arc in the opening half. Overall, the Timberwolves shot 48.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes (15-31).
The second half saw NU go inside and get to the foul line to earn the win. Northwood was 11-20 from inside 3-point range (55.0 percent) and convert 26 free throws (26-33). Ashland led only once in the second half (42-41), but the Eagles stayed close with the Timberwolves. Ashland cut the lead to one six times in the final 5:27 but never tied the game or took the lead in that stretch.
For the game, Northwood finished at 48.2 percent (27-68) overall. NU also had season-highs in free throw attempts (40) and makes (28).
Bobby Lewis (Saginaw, Mich./Mott C.C.) led all scorers in the game, finishing with 25 points. He went 5-12 from the floor and 12-15 from the foul line. Andrew VanDierenDonck (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) added 17 points and six rebounds. For the second time in a week, Bobby Gibson (Harper Woods, Mich.) finished with a career-high in scoring. This time he registered 15 points. Gibson also added six rebounds and three blocks.
Northwood will travel to Lake Erie Saturday (December 16). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
