The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team picked up their second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) victory today (Jan. 15), defeating the Huskies of Michigan Tech University, 70-61.

HOUGHTON -- The Cardinals jumped out to an early 10-point lead at the 14:05 mark in the first half as sophomore guard Michael Fugate (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) found an open lane for a successful lay-up.  Within four minutes, Michigan Tech would cut the Saginaw Valley lead to just one point, however the Cardinals would respond and re-gain their 10-point lead with under a minute remaining in the first half as junior guard Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind./T.C. Howe HS) connected on a lay-up.  Saginaw Valley entered the locker room at halftime with an eight point lead over the Huskies, 36-28.

Saginaw Valley found themselves tied at 43 in the opening five minutes of the contest as Michigan Tech connected on a three-point shot and would take the lead, however the Cardinals would respond as Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) found an open shot behind the 3-point line to tie the game at 50.  The Cardinals and Huskies would battle back-and-forth for the lead throughout the final eight minutes of play once Saginaw Valley took control of the game as senior center Adam Roberts (Adrian, Mich./Madison HS) found an open lay-up to give the Cardinals the lead and would seal the victory, 70-61.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior forward Dan Genther (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg HS) who earned Meijer "Player of the Game" recognition, finishing the afternoon with 12 points and pulled down four rebounds.  Foster and Webb would also chip in 12 points for Saginaw Valley while Roberts led the way in rebounding with seven.

With the win, the Cardinals move to 6-8 overall on the season and 2-8 in the GLIAC while Michigan Tech falls to 10-5 overall on the season and 5-3 in conference play.  Saginaw Valley will return to action this Thursday (Jan. 20) as they host Ashland University in a GLIAC match-up.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
