Saginaw outlasts Rangers, 3-2
The Saginaw Spirit beat the Kitchener Rangers in a 3-2 shootout Saturday night at a sold out Dow Event Center of Saginaw. The win completes a Stanley Steemer Clean Sweep, and gives the Spirit an OHL West Division leading 72 points and 34-16-3-1 record. Saginaw’s John McFarland was the first star of the game with an assist and the game winning shootout goal.
SAGINAW --
Spirit winger Anthony Camara started off the scoring with his sixth goal of the season a minute forty-five into the game. Defenseman Brad Walch tallied the lone assist on the goal. The Rangers would respond on the power play, with defenseman Jamie Doornbosch scoring at the 4:40 mark from winger Jerry D’Amigo and winger Jason Akeson. The Spirit came out ahead at the end of the first period however, with center Vincent Trocheck scoring a power play goal at 15:53 from defenseman Peter Hermenegildo and center John McFarland. The first period would end 2-1, with the Rangers making it a tied effort in the final seconds of the second period. Rangers captain Gabriel Landeskog scored an unassisted goal at 19:38 to tie up the game.
The teams battled through a scoreless third period and 4-on-4 overtime before squaring off in a shootout. The first two rounds missed their mark, with Garret Ross and Vincent Trocheck unable to put a tally on the score sheet and Spirit goalie Mavric Parks stopping efforts from Michael Catenacci and Jerry D’Amigo. The Spirit secure the 3-2 win after McFarland tallied the lone shootout goal and Parks stoned Ryan Murphy.
Spirit goalie Mavric Parks tallied 30 saves on 32 shots and Rangers goalie Brandon Maxwell tallied 36 saves on 38 shots.
