Baseball among numerous varsity sports to be implemented
UNIVERSITY CENTER -- For the 2011-2012 academic year, Delta College will be implementing a reorganization of its athletic programs. Delta will offer baseball as a varsity sport for the first time in its history. Along with baseball, Delta will field teams in men’s basketball, bowling, golf, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and softball. These changes will increase the total number of Delta student athletes by about thirty, and increase athletic participation opportunities for both men and women.
Sports were evaluated by their level of student interest and alignment to community trends. For example, there’s been tremendous growth and success of women’s soccer at the youth and high school levels in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Delta College felt the need to support that growth by adding a program of its own to provide an opportunity for local female athletes to continue playing while obtaining a great education. The addition of golf and bowling allow both men and women to participate, yet keeps the athletic programs well within Title IX adherence. Men’s soccer and women’s volleyball are being discontinued.
“We’re making these adjustments because, whether it is job training, student services, or athletics, Delta College strives to support the needs and trends of the community,” said Greg Mallek, Delta College Athletic Director.
