Flint Northwestern holds off valiant effort from tough Kearsley squad

MT. MORRIS TWP. -- After a loss to Carman-Ainsworth which cost them the chance to win the Big Nine title outright, followed by an overtime scare against Flushing which almost cost them that same title altogether, the Flint Powers Chargers entered the Class B District Playoffs in a rather foul mood.

On Monday, Goodrich found out just HOW foul.

With Vince Adams, Patrick Lucas-Perry and Javontae Hawkins combining for 67 points - while all scoring at least 20 apiece - the Chargers demolished the Martians by a 103-63 final.  Goodrich pushed Flint Powers to the brink last season in another district opener, but that game was played on the Martians' home floor.  This time around, with the Chargers enjoying the comforts of home, the result was drastically different.  The Chargers will now meet Flint Southwestern Academy in the semis on Wednesday night.

Just down the road in a Class A district opener, Flint Northwestern outlasted Kearsley by a 69-59 final, in a game that the Wildcats had to work all 32 minutes to earn.  Their lead at the half was only 35-33, and despite a run to open the second half which pushed the margin to double-figures, the Hornets kept battling and never allowed the home team to relax until the final buzzer.  The Wildcats will meet Lapeer West on Wednesday night in the semi-finals.

The second game of the night at Northwestern pitted Clio against Davison, and despite a strong start from the Mustangs, the Cardinals eventually ran away with a 61-44 win, earning a date with Lapeer East on Wednesday night.

Also in Class A, Grand Blanc used a dominant fourth quarter to finally pull away from Swartz Creek and earn a 55-36 victory in a game which was much more competitive than the final score may indicate.  The Bobcats will now meet another Flint Metro foe, Brandon, Wednesday night in Fenton.  And finally, in Class C, Reese took down Montrose by a 65-50 final to earn a trip to New Lothrop on Wednesday evening.
