Halloween type event garners the award
The UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University Athletic Department has been awarded the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Community Engagement Award for the 2010-11 academic year.
SVSU was awarded the GLIAC Community Engagement Award for its annual “Trunk-or-Treat” Around the Track program.
The event, which was sponsored by Meijer and Graff Chevrolet of Bay City, allowed kids a safe and fun atmosphere to go trick-or-treating in the Ryder Center while interacting with Cardinal student-athletes and coaches. The 2010 event drew over 900 kids ages 12 and under and included a costume contest for three different age groups.
“SVSU Athletics has made Community Engagement a priority over the course of the last few years. Trunk-or-Treat around the Track is a phenomenal program, which brings children and their families to SVSU to participate in a Halloween type event, which includes opportunities to interact with Cardinal athletes and coaches,” stated SVSU Associate Athletic Director/SWA Angela Pohl. “Moreover, it encourages physical activity and healthy choices as we conduct sport activity stations and hand-out healthy snacks, in addition to candy as the kids navigated around the track.”
This marks the second time that the SVSU Athletic Department has been selected as the winner of the GLIAC Community Engagement Award in the award’s three-year existence.
SVSU Athletics is already hard at work in planning the 2011 “Trunk-or-Treat” Around the Track event, which will be held on October 28th this year and will take place inside the Ryder Center on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University.
