After going 1-8 last year, the Chargers on preparing to play in the state semi final game this weekend
FLINT -- Last year they were 1-8, but this year under new head coach Bob Buckel, the Powers Catholic Chargers are 8-4 and heading for the state semi finals this weekend. That's quite a turnaround for the Chargers who are surprising a lot of people out there, including themselves.
Buckel said if you'd have asked him a month ago if his guys could knock off three good football teams en route to the Division Five Semi Final round, he said he would have been surprised, especially since the Chargers started off this season 0-2.
But now, he said, his team's confidence continues to grow as now they've beaten Frankenmuth, Millington, and Hemlock.
Saturday, Powers plays a physical Almont team at Howell High School who's got some pretty good running backs, but defending the run, Buckel said, has been the Charger's strength so far.
"Our strengths lately have been on defense," Buckel said. "We've been able to slow down a lot of running games, which made it a good match up with Hemlock because no one was able to do that so far. Offensively, we've done a little bit of everything and somehow we find a way to score. I don't know what you call our offense, but we score."
"We started the day after the season ended last year, saying we are not going to accept 1-8 anymore," Senior Running Back Drew Fortier said. "We had a dream and it's becoming a reality."
