Gilbert brings almost 20 years of NHL experience to Saginaw
SAGINAW -- Today, Greg Gilbert was introduced as the new Saginaw Spirit head coach, the sixth coach in team history.
Gilbert began his coaching career with the American Hockey League’s Worcester IceCats in the 1996-97 season posting 43 wins in his first season at the helm.
Gilbert moved on to the Calgary Flames as an Assistant Coach in the 2000-01 season taking over the Head Coaching duties with the National Hockey League team.
Gilbert then took over the Head Coaching duties of the Ontario Hockey League’s Mississauga IceDogs (now Niagara IceDogs) in the 2003-04 season. He led the IceDogs to two of the franchises best seasons in history as they appeared in the 03-04 OHL Final losing to the Guelph Storm. The following year, Gilbert’s IceDogs won the OHL’s Central Division Title and finished first overall in the Eastern Conference in the regular season.
From 2007 until 2001 Gilbert returned to the AHL serving as Head Coach of the Toronto Marlies and Adirondack Phantoms. His 2007-08 Marlies team recorded 50 wins before falling in the third round of the playoffs.
Gilbert will make his debut behind the bench on Wednesday, December 14 against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
