Bay City native and former Michigan State safety Trenton Robinson had to wait two days and 179 picks until he finally heard his name called in the 2012 NFL Draft.
But with family, and friends the wait was well worth it. NBC25's Jamie Edmonds was there with him throughout his draft experience.
It's Friday night in Gull Lake and Trenton Robinson is ready.
"I'm not really nervous," Robinson said. "I'm excited, ready to do this thing."
Robinson has been dreaming about being drafted since he first put on his cleats for the Bay City Central Wolves.
He's been working for it throughout his college career as safety for the Spartans and anticipated hearing his name being called out by an NFL team since the Senior Bowl, the NFL combine and MSU's Pro Day.
"It's surreal wow, you're finally here, all the work," Robinson said. "You're here and you're about to see Trenton Robinson of such and such team."
Robinson chose the family home of his girlfriend for his viewing party because it was out of the way and he could control the small group of people he wanted around him for his big moment.
"Usually, I'm overwhelmed, but you realize this is bigger than yourself," Robinson said.
Friday is round two and three in this 2012 draft. It would be a long shot for Robinson to go tonight but anything is possible and the 5'10" 195 pound safety got great feedback from several teams.
"I have no idea [which team might draft me,] but I'm hearing late third, fourth, even late as the 5th round," Robinson said.
Robinson's friend, Jerel Worthy gets picked by the Packers in the second round, excitement grows but more than 60 players go off the board this night, no mention of Robinson.
It's Saturday afternoon in Gull Lake, rounds 4-7.
"Yesterday was long, waiting, today is longer still," Robinson said Saturday. "I guess when you're sitting and watching, you're like come on, waiting to hear your name. It was good to see my boys go."
Kirk cousins, MSU's QB gets picked in the fourth round by the Redskins. The fifth-round comes and goes, still no mention of Robinson who made 229 tackles in his four-year career at MSU with nine interceptions and 12 pass breakups.
Other safeties with weaker stats have already been picked. The mood is tense in round six, Robinson goes to a back room to get away.
Then, word comes out that the 49er's have come to call.
"I'm so happy," Robinson said into his phone. "My dream is becoming a reality."
Jim Harbaugh called Robinson personally to tell him San Francisco would pick him in the 6th round, 180th overall.
"Coach Harbaugh called and said we want you, we'll be taking you and I said alright I'm ready to go," Robinson said. "I've been waiting all day."
Then there were tears, hugs and excitement for the future.
"We're really excited, he's worked so hard, he's humble and passionate," Trenton's mom, Tammy Wilkins, said. "He loves the game so much."
Robinson said he knows there are no garauntees.
"I got drafted, but I still have to make the team," he said.
As his mom said, good things come to those who wait, and as everyone else said, 'it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.'
Robinson said he plans to enjoy this news for a few days, he won't head out to the west coast until few weeks, but then begins the hard work again.
