The end of an era in Detroit as Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom announced his retirement Thursday.
Lidstrom played all of his 20 seasons in the NHL with Detroit, accounting for 1,564 games played, the most by any player who played for one team throughout their career. The Red Wings never missed the playoffs throughout Lidstrom’s 20-year career.
The gritty defender was apart of four Stanley Cup championship teams and won the Norris Trophy (awarded to the league’s best defenseman) seven times. For his career, Lidstrom scored 264 goals with 1,142 points.
