Flint’s Olympic boxer Claressa Shields will appear in the August 2012 edition of Essence Magazine after interviewing with journalist Lisa Armstrong discussing the traumatic events which occurred during her childhood.
Shields recalls being about five years of age when the sexual abuse started occurring. An acquaintance of the family would wait until Claressa’s mother, Marcella Adams, would leave for her job at Wal-Mart, and take her into a room and molest her.
This abuse occurred several times, until Claressa’s aunt saw how upset Shields was each time she was leaving to return home.
The 17-year-old is currently in Colorado training for the 2012 London Olympics. Shields will head to London once the training camp ends July 14 and prepare for the first-ever Olympic women’s boxing competition.
