After much negotiation between the Detroit Lions and Cliff Avril, the 6-foot-3, 260 pound defensive end is without a long term contract.
NFL.com's Albert Breer sent out a tweet early Monday afternoon, stating the Lions' "final offer to Cliff Avril was worth about $30 million over three years, with $20 million guaranteed."
With Monday's 4 p.m. deadline in the past, Avril will play the 2012 season with a one-year deal worth $10.6 million.
A disappointed Avril may choose to not attend the Lions open training camp, which begins with veterans reporting July 26.
"Definitely something I wanted, definitely wanted to be here long-term. I wanted to get something done. I want to be with the Lions, I want to be in Detroit, but we’ll be back at the same situation next year, unfortunately," Avril told the Free Press.
Avril, 26, has played four seasons for the Lions, and started every game of the 2011 season, leading Detroit with six forced fumbles, and 11 sacks. He won't get another chance to sign a long term contract with the Lions until the end of the 2012 season, in compliance with the NFL's collective bargaining agreement.
