LAPEER -- On day two of high school football practice, the Lapeer East Eagles are working to defend their share of a 2011 Flint Metro League title.

They only have two returning starters on offense including a new starting quarterback. The Eagles said they're not worried as they plan to make the playoffs for the third straight season.

"When you have nine guys stepping into roles and they're new, it's tough," said Jake Weingartz, Lapeer East head coach. "But we definitely put the work in this summer."

"We are going to win games by working hard, not by scoring a lot of points," said senior linebacker Ben Muir. "We are going to win games by pounding the rock up the middle between the tackles and hitting hard. That's how we are doing it this year."

East opens their season against Clio on August 24.
