Northwood Loses To Michigan Tech 79-65

The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 79-65 contest to Michigan Tech University Thursday night (January 24).

MIDLAND, MICH. -- The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 79-65 contest to Michigan Tech University Thursday night (January 24).

The Timberwolves fall to 6-11 overall, 5-8 in the GLIAC.  The Huskies improve to 12-5 overall, 9-4 in the GLIAC.

Northwood led for the majority of the first half, going up 16-15 early and maintaining an advantage the rest of the opening 20 minutes. The Timberwolves led by as many as nine before taking a 30-22 lead to the locker room.  The 3-point line was the key to NU's lead, as the Timberwolves connected on 7-13 from beyond the arc (53.8 percent).

It was Michigan Tech's shooting in the second half that proved to be the key to the game.  MTU finished at 75.0 percent overall from the floor (21-28) and 66.7 percent from 3-point range (6-9). Northwood was 50.0 percent from the floor (14-28) and 40.0 percent from 3-point range (4-10) but were out-scored 57-35 after halftime.

Overall for the game, Northwood shot 47.2 percent from the floor (25-53) and 47.8 percent from 3-point range (11-23).  MTU finished at 61.7 percent overall (29-47) and 56.3 percent from 3-point range (9-16).

The highlight of the night for the Timberwolves was senior guard Andrew VanDierenDonck (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) netting his 1,000th career point.  He is the 28th player in program history to reach the milestone and the first since 2009 (Aaron Simpson).  VanDierenDonck finished the game with 10 points.

The Timberwolves had three other players reach double figures, led by Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper CC) with 20 points, and five rebounds. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind./Morristown) came off the bench to finish with 14 points and five rebounds. Darvin Ham (Saginaw, Mich./Bridgeport) also had ten points.

Northwood will host Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon (January 26). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
