Post season play continued on Tuesday for the Division 3 baseball quarterfinals held at Saginaw Valley State. Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central took down Frankenmuth 3-1. For the Eagles, the loss ends what was their longest post season run ever. Meanwhile, the Panthers advance to the semifinals to face Madison Heights Bishop Foley on Friday at Brown Stadium in Battle Creek.
"Give a lot of credit to Frankenmuth," said Dave Horny, Nouvel Catholic's head coach. "They had a great season. It was tough to have either team lose but I'm glad we won."
"We started off slow but won a string of games and had something to play for," said Cory Smith, Frankenmuth senior shortstop. "It was a fun season and we had some great games."
In the Division 2 baseball quarterfinals, Bay City John Glenn continues to roll with a 7-0 victory over Remus Chippewa Hills. Sophomore pitcher Tone Jacobs picked up the win pitching a complete game shutout. Sam Brooks had four RBI and scored twice for the Bobcats. Bay City will advance to face St. Joseph on Friday.
The Flushing Raiders dropped their Division 1 quarterfinal matchup against Hudsonville 6-2 on Tuesday. Jacob Bowden and Ryan Vince each scored for the Raiders.
In the division four softball quarterfinals, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart defeated Bay City 4-3 and will advance to play Peterburg Summerfield on Friday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. Kelsey Poag had two hits and two RBI for Sacred Heart. Michelle Kleinau added three hits for the All Saints.
"We struggled a little bit but our D held strong and Kelsey pitched great," said Amy Gandard, Sacred heart head coach.
Lake Fenton dropped their division three quarterfinal matchup with Unionville-Sebewaing 6-0 on Tuesday at Saginaw Valley State. Paula Valacak threw a complete game for the Blue Devils.
Saginaw Swan Valley defeated Escanaba 12-1 in a division 2 softball quarterfinal matchup. Scoreless through 3, the Vikings exploded for seven runs in the fourth, providing what proved to be more than enough to advance to the semifinals to face Coloma on Friday.
In division one play, Swartz Creek lost their quarterfinal matchup with Hudsonville, 4-2. The Dragons led by one through three, before a four-run fourth gave Hudsonville the lead for good. Ashley Beck and Gabby Deering each had an RBI for Swartz Creek.
