Skellett and Murovich score three points
KINGSTON, ON -- The Saginaw Spirit battled the Kingston Frontenacs to a 6-3 victory Sunday afternoon, sweeping their weekend three-game road series and the season series between the two teams.
Three Spirit goals in the final half of the third period moved the team past the Frontenacs and secured the win. Jordan Skellett and Tyler Murovich each posted three points on the night. The Spirit are in fourth place in the OHL Western Conference with 55 points and a record of 26-15-0-3. The Spirit are closing in on the Guelph Storm, who sit at third place with 57 points and a record of 26-15-2-3.
The Spirit got onto the scoreboard first with a power play goal at 17:42 in the first period, scored by defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES) and assisted by center Jack Combs and defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES). The first period ended 1-0 Saginaw.
The second period saw an increase in the scoring, with the Frontenacs responding to the opening Spirit goal to tie the game 1-1. Kingston winger Stephen Francella notched the goal at 9:41 in the period, assisted by winger Jesse Brown and defenseman Taylor Doherty. Saginaw would respond with two straight goals, the first coming on the power play from winger Jordan Szwarz at the 13:56 mark. Winger Jordan Skellett and center Tyler Murovich assisted on the goal. The Spirit would exit the second frame with a two goal advantage. Former Frontenac Kyle Bochek scored with :06 seconds remaining in the period, courtesy assists from winger Mitch Fillman and Skellett.
The Frontenacs would reduce the deficit and tie up the game early in the third period. Center Nathan Moon (NHL PITTSBURGH PENGUINS) notched a power play goal 1:25 into the period, assisted by center George Lovatsis and defenseman Corbin Crawford. Kingston’s momentum would continue with winger Bobby Mignardi scoring at the 9:46 mark, tying the game 3-3. The Frontenacs Crawford and winger Ethan Werek assisted on the goal.
The Spirit would be quick to respond however with three unanswered goals. Skellett regained Saginaw’s lead with a goal 12:21 in the third, assisted by Szwarz and Murovich. Defenseman Adam Comrie (NHL FLORIDA PANTHERS) followed with an insurance goal less than two minutes later, firing in a shot from the circle to give the Spirit a 5-3 lead at the 14:04 mark. Murovich posted his third assist of the night on the play, and winger Ryan Schnell tallied his first OHL point with the second credited assist. Combs sealed the Spirit victory with an empty net goal 19:59 in the period. The Spirit out shot the Frontenacs 47 to 40 and took home a 6-3 victory.
Saginaw netminder Anthony Peters earned the win in net against his former teammates, notching 37 saves on 40 shot. Kingston goalie Mavric Parks posted 41 saves on 46 shots.
