Saginaw earns 2-1, shootout win after coughing up late lead
SAGINAW -- The Saginaw Spirit bested the Guelph Storm 2-1 in a shootout Saturday night, advancing their consecutive win streak to seven games. The win also gave the Spirit a Stanley Steemer Weekend Sweep with three wins in three games, matching the team’s three game sweep from last weekend. Saginaw leads the Ontario Hockey League with 14 points and a record of 7-1-0-0.
Saturday’s game also marked the very successful fourth annual PINK OUT Breast Cancer Awareness Game, benefiting the St. Mary’s of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute. Thanks to the support of fans, St. Mary’s of Michigan, the Hockey Angels hockey team and more, the Saginaw Spirit raised over $12,000 for the cause.
On the Ice, the Spirit donned their commemorative pink jerseys as they skated to a 2-1 shootout win over the Guelph Storm. Spirit forward Anthony Camara opened scoring at 5:15 from defenseman Peter Hermenegildo. The Spirit would retain their one goal advantage until the final :20 seconds of the game, when Storm forward Peter Holland notched a goal to tie the game 1-1 from forward Taylor Beck and defenseman Tim Campbell.
The game passed through a scoreless 5:00 minute 4-on-4 overtime and into a shootout. Spirit snipers Michael Sgarbossa and Vince Trocheck tallied goals for the Spirit, and goalie Mavric Parks was able to shutout the Storm shooters to seal the win for Saginaw.
Parks earned the game’s first star honors with 26 saves on 27 shots, while Storm goalie Brandon Foote notched 40 saves on 41 shots.
