Plymouth upends Saginaw in early-morning battle, 4-1
SAGINAW -- The Saginaw Spirit suffered a 4-1 loss to the Plymouth Whalers in front of a sold out crowd of 5,527 at the Dow Event Center Tuesday Morning during the Annual Dow Chemical Company Education Day Game presented by Covenant Health Care, Dow Corning and Duperon. Spirit captain Jordan Szwarz tallied the lone Spirit goal of the effort. The Spirit lead the OHL West Division with 78 points and a record of 37-20-3-1.
The Spirit opened scoring at 3:08 first with Spirit winger Jordan Szwarz notching his twentieth goal of the season from winger Garret Ross. The Whalers would cap off first period scoring with two straight goals, the first coming from winger James Livingston at 4:06 courtesy assists by defenseman Austin Levi and winger Jamie Devane. Devane later scored to make it 2-1, a power play goal at 15:02 from wingers Tyler Brown and Garrett Meurs.
The Whalers would clinch the win with two goals in the second period. Winger Stefan Noesen fired in a power-play goal at 5:44 in the second period assisted by center Robbie Czarnik and Brown. Later in the frame Plymouth winger RJ Mahalek moved the score to 4-1 with a goal at 7:15 from defensemen Austin Levi and Brown.
Spirit goalie Mavric Parks notched 26 saves on 30 shots, while Whalers netminder Scott Wedgewood posted 27 saves on 28 shots.
