Waier ends shootout with clutch save
SAGINAW TOWNSHIP -- The Grand Blanc girls soccer team got by Midland Dow 2-1 in a penalty shootout Tuesday evening in Saginaw Township to advance to the Division 1 State Quarterfinals.
The Bobcats take on Troy High School Friday night.
Chargers sophomore Rachel Marble broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half, sending a beautiful left-footed shot off the right post and into the back of the net.
Grand Blanc answered with a volley goal from junior Hailey Fisher.
"When they got ahead by a goal, there's obviously reason for concern but I think the way that we've been playing lately, we weren't really panicking. There was a lot of time left, 20 minutes or better. I kind of thought we might get another chance and we did. It was a great cross by Kara (Huber)," said Grand Blanc head coach Greg Kehler following the victory.
After two scoreless overtimes, the game was decided in a shootout.
In the third round of the shootout, Grand Blanc senior goalie Morgan Waier put an end to the drama, with a sprawling game-ending save.
"I hope for the best and I guessed the right way. I read the other players' eyes and it turned out for the better. Just happy we won," said Waier.
