Tim McDonald became the 36th coach in state history to win 500 baseball games
SAGINAW -- If it hasn't already, Tim McDonald's name is etched in Michigan high school history after earning his 500th win as Bay City Western's head baseball coach.
"I've been fortunate to have some great players over my 20 years as head coach," McDonald said.
But he hasn't just won a ton of games. He's won four Saginaw Valley League titles along with making two state semifinal appearances in 2006 and 2009.
"Our kids are serious about baseball. They have a passion for baseball," McDonald said. "It's made my job easy and I still enjoy it. Otherwise I wouldn't be doing it."
One of his seniors, outfielder Garret Pashak, said his coach doesn't like to make a big deal about his accomplishments. He added, however, it doesn't make 500 wins any less special.
"It's remarkable for him," Pashak said. "It gives him something more to strive for in the future. Keep going for 600, 700 depending on how far he wants to go."
However long McDonald decides to coach, it won't be his lack of love for the game that stops him or slows him down.
"I still look forward to come out on the field every day and working with these kids because they wanna be pushed and they expect success," McDonald said. "Hopefully we can continue it, certainly this year."
