MT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan field hockey team was even with No. 13 Iowa after the first half, 1-1, but allowed three second-half scores as the Hawkeyes claimed a 4-1 victory Sunday afternoon at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Chippewas (3-6, 0-1 MAC) recovered from an Iowa (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten) goal 46 seconds into the contest with a goal of their own from junior midfielder Erica Garwood, but couldn't contain the potent Hawkeye offense in the second period.
Iowa's Corinne Allen broke through and away from the CMU defense just 46 seconds into the match and found the back of the cage from about five yards out as freshman goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds, in her first collegiate start, came out to challenge the play, giving the Hawkeyes an early 1-0 lead.
The Chippewas answered with a goal of their own in the 16th minute as Garwood took a deflection from junior forward Bailey McKeon and scored from about six yards out on the right side. The goal is Garwood's third of the season and the second in her last three matches.
Senior midfielder Erin Dye attempted to put the Chippewas ahead with a shot off a penalty corner in the 21st minute that was saved by Iowa goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw.
Central's defense held the Hawkeyes scoreless for the remainder of the half, but the Hawkeyes continued their trend of strong second halves to control possession and pull away in the final 35 minutes of play.
Iowa's Dani Hemeon scored off one of the Hawkeye's six second-half penalty corners in the fifth minute of the second half to give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Hawkeyes again scored on a penalty corner nine minutes later when Sarah Drake deflected a direct shot from Marike Stribos for a 3-1 advantage.
A final goal was added in the 65th minute when Reynolds saved a shot by Aubrey Coleman, but Kelsey Mitchell found the rebound and put it in the cage for a 4-1 lead.
Reynolds made six saves in her first collegiate start in goal.
The Chippewas are on the road this upcoming weekend with matches against MAC foe Ball State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and against Pacific at noon on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich.
