DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with outfielder Torii Hunter through the 2014 season.
Hunter saw action in 140 games with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during the 2012 season, batting .313 (167x534) with 81 runs scored, 24 doubles, a triple, 16 home runs, 92 RBI and nine stolen bases. He tied for sixth in the American League with a .313 batting average during the season. Hunter finished fifth in the league with a .340 batting average (49x144) versus lefthanded pitchers in 2012, while he finished ninth with a .344 batting average (54x157) with runners in scoring position.
“Torii Hunter is a quality major league player who is a tremendous addition to the Tigers organization both on and off the field,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “He continues to be a consistent contributor at the plate, in the outfield and on bases, and we feel Torii is a great fit for our lineup.”
Selected by Minnesota in the first round of the June 1993 draft, Hunter has played 15 seasons at the major league level with the Twins (1998-2007) and Angels (2008-12). He is batting .277 (1986x7181) with 406 doubles, 32 triples, 297 home runs, 1,143 RBI and 186 stolen bases in 1,946 games during his major league career.
Hunter has been selected to the American League all-star squad four times during his career (2002, 2007, 2009-10), including being elected as a starter in the outfield through the fan balloting with the Twins in 2002. He has won nine Rawlings Gold Glove Awards during his career (2001-09), and he earned an American League Silver Slugger Award in 2009.
He has compiled a .992 fielding percentage during his major league career, seventh-highest among all active major league outfielders. Hunter is third among all active major league outfielders with 4,591 putouts during his career, while he is fourth with 4,471 total chances and sixth with 111 outfield assists.
Hunter is hitting .305 (40x131) with 10 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 18 RBI in 34 games during his career in post-season action.
He was the recipient of the Marvin Miller “Man of the Year” Award in 2007, an honor given to the player in either league whose on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement.
