FLINT -- A month ago, Flint Northwestern forward Sparkle Taylor gave a verbal commitment to the University of Texas-El Paso.

Friday, she made it official.

The senior signed her letter of intent to play for UTEP in 2013-14 at Flint Northwestern Academy in Flint.

“It's a lot of weight off my shoulders because I don't have to deal with other colleges calling me,” Taylor said of her decision.

Taylor said she chose to be a Miner they have committed to her since her freshman year. She also like the fact UTEP is a winning program—the women’s basketball team is coming off a 29-4 season and a Conference USA regular season and tournament championship.

The Flint Journal all-area forward averaged 15 points and nearly nine rebounds a game in 2012. Taylor said will head into the 2013 season relieved that the pressure is off in her senior season with the Wildcats.

“I can go to sleep without a headache,” she said.

Flint Northwestern’s girls basketball team will begin their season November 27 at home against Clio.
