USTA's top money event begins Feb. 7th

Chicago’s Courtney Dolehide,18, got her ticket to ride to the qualifier of the Dow Corning Tennis Classic February 7-9, winning the Go-To Transport Wild Card Challenge over the weekend.

MIDLAND -- Dolehide defeated New York’s Emily Gelber, 17, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Four Tennis Academy juniors from host Midland Community Tennis Center, competed with Katie and Kelli Close and Daniella Patton wining first round matches in the  12-player draw. Andrea Calhoun lost a first round match. Tennis Academy Director Patrick Jenkins was director of the “challenge.”

“ The Academy juniors got a look at what’s out there with older players, many former college players, or professional instructors, in the draw,” Jenkins said.

Thirty-two players will vie for two spots in the main draw when the qualifier starts with viewing free to the public.

“Then it’s the 22nd running of the award-award Dow Corning Tennis Classic, hosted by your Midland Community Tennis Center in America’s Best Tennis Town,” said Mike Woody, executive director of the tournament and the MCTC.

The USTA recently approved  $100,000 for the tournament, making it the Tour’s top prize money event. About 15,000 fans are expected over the eight days and of competition.
